Colorado's record-setting wildfire season will leave behind potentially harmful conditions in water supplies, according to a University of Colorado at Boulder researcher and former U.S. Forest Service firefighter. Mark Williams, a fellow at CU's Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research and co-associate director of the institute's undergraduate academy, said that a potentially cancerous compound called trihalomethane (THM) could show up in drinking water drawn from water bodies that drain burned areas.

Segments of the Bear Creek and Apache Road multiuse paths will be closed for approximately one month each this summer because of the Williams Village student housing expansion project for the University of Colorado at Boulder. Effective immediately, the Bear Creek multiuse path between Apache Road and Baseline Road will be closed. At least one path, either Apache Road or Bear Creek, will be maintained at all times to provide an appropriate detour route during the relocation of each path.

The Scripps Howard Foundation has awarded $555,470 to the Center for Environmental Journalism at the University of Colorado at Boulder for renewal of the Ted Scripps Fellowships in Environmental Journalism. The fellowship program helps journalists better understand environmental issues and, in turn, they help educate the public, said Len Ackland, director of the center, which is part of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

For the fifth consecutive year, CU-Boulder faculty, staff and students are teaming up with Community Food Share to grow vegetables for people in need throughout Boulder County. The success of the program has grown each year and now includes a garden on the East Campus. "This is a wonderful example of two organizations working together to help people in need," said Dave Carlson, Community Food Share garden coordinator. "The gardens are a valuable source of fresh produce."

Deana Perlmutter, senior vice president and manager of the Dutko Group Cos.-Denver, has joined the CU-Boulder Natural Resources Law Center Advisory Board. "Deana has been a strong force for regulatory and policy change to encourage and assist industries in utilizing advanced technologies," said center Director Jim Martin. "She has worked closely with senior officials throughout the federal, state and local government, making her a valuable addition to our already strong board."

The University of Colorado at Boulder has been awarded a four-year, $2.2 million grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to strengthen the institution's highly successful Biological Sciences Initiative.

Ron Stump, vice chancellor for Student Affairs at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has appointed Matthew Lopez-Phillips as director of the Office of Judicial Affairs. The appointment has been approved by Chancellor Byyny and is effective immediately. "Matthew possesses the skills and background to be a very successful director," Stump said. "Of most importance, he has judicial experience with our residence halls, the campus-wide system and at other universities. I expect him to build strong working relationships across the campus."

In a June 27 CU-Boulder news release titled "Medieval Manuscript Exhibit on Display at CU-Boulder," the opening date of the exhibit was incorrect. The exhibit will open on July 17 and will be on display through Sept. 13.
