About

About the Neuroscience Club

The CU Neuroscience Club was influential in bringing about the foundation of the Undergraduate Neuroscience major at CU. We didn't just help start the Neuroscience major, we continue to help evolve it today.

By connecting students with peers, professors and professionals, we give you the best opportunities to succeed at CU Boulder. We convene to inspire, inform, and involve ourselves in all things neuroscience and invite students of all disciplines to join us.

Board Members

Grant Derose - President

Hi! My name is Grant DeRose, and I am a senior studying Neuroscience and Psychology with a minor in Communications. I transferred here freshman year from UC San Diego and have been a part of the neuroscience club executive board ever since. I plan on getting my PhD in Neuropsychology and working as a clinical neuropsychologist.

Lia Farrell

Lia Farrell - Vice-President

Lia is a fourth-year double major in neuroscience and molecular biology who is also pursuing a STEM Eduction certificate. She also works at the Baratta lab studying sex differences in stress resilience circuitry. Long-term, she’s interested in studying how menopause affects cognitive circuitry. Her hobbies are reading, painting, and playing video games. She is the current Vice President.

Avery Newman - Treasurer

Avery is a junior with a Neuroscience major and a minor in computer science. In her free time, she enjoys hiking and Sudoku puzzles. Her favorite part of Neuroscience club is learning about new and exciting research and connecting with other people who love the brain. She is the current treasurer.

Chris Capre - Operations Manager

Chris Capre is a post-bacc year 3 student in the NRSC program. His research focus is on neuroimmunology, particularly how neuroinflammation is either the cause or contributor to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. He is the current operations manager for the NRSC club.

Sarah Ahrens

Sarah Ahrens - Chair of Communications

Sarah Ahrens is a driven undergraduate honors student double majoring in neuroscience and psychology. She is actively studying sex differences in dominance-induced resilience in pre-clinical models. She would eventually like to work in clinical neuropsychiatric research, with a focus in PTSD effects in adolescent women. She is the current communications chair.

David Deckerman

David Deckerman - Chair of Events

David is a junior majoring in Ecology with Evolutionary Biology with a minor in computational biology. David is interested in the intersectionality of computation, neuroscience, and public health. In his free time, he enjoys rock climbing and hiking. He is the current chair of events.

Cate Hensley

Cate Hensley - Chair of Marketing

Cate is a sophomore with majors in Neuroscience and MCDB, and a minor in music. In her free time, she likes to read, bake, and play the marimba. Her ultimate goal is to get a PhD in a biomedical science and pursue a career in academic research. She also hopes to help improve support and awareness for STEM students with medical limitations. Her favorite part of Neuroscience Club is hearing from speakers and professionals, and she is the current chair of marketing.

The Neuroscience Major

CU Boulder offers a degree in Neuroscience with a focus on Behavioral Neuroscience which is the field of neuroscience that explores how the brain and nervous system influence behavior. This discipline combines principles from psychology, neuroscience and molecular biology to understand how biological process impact learning, memory, stress, perception and emotions.

In this major, you will learn rigorous scientific methods to uncover the links between the brain, hormones and how neural circuits influence behavioral patterns.

Upper level classes and advanced coursework will include working in laboratories while building your research and scientific skills within the broad field of neuroscience. There is considerable flexibility in our advanced course options that allows students to tailor their course work towards specific interests.
