The 2023 Research & Innovation Seed Grants, awarded by CU Boulder's Research & Innovation Office (RIO) and the Office of the Provost, are funding 25 new projects for up to $75,000 each. This year鈥檚 awards include five projects spurred by a new pool of funding that encouraged external partnerships by leveraging matching funding from industry, national labs, universities, community nonprofits and others.

Tandems for Efficient and Advanced Modules using Ultrastable Perovskites (TEAMUP) has secured $9M in federal funding from the DOE's Solar Technologies Office. Led by RASEI Fellow Mike McGehee (Chemical and Biological Engineering), the consortium brings together researchers from labs across the country to develop a near-term solution for more efficient solar panels.

The CU Boulder Department of Physics has received a $94.5 million award from NIST to continue the collaborative Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) for the next five years. Started in 1994, the PREP program provides funding for undergraduate and graduate students in physics and other departments to work with researchers at NIST on cutting-edge projects, including new atomic clocks, precision quantum measurement and more.

Since its genesis, LASP has been instrumental in positioning the university as a hub for the state鈥檚 aerospace and defense economy, the largest per capita in the nation. This leadership will continue this week, when representatives from LASP and other CU affiliates participate in the 38th annual Space Symposium.

The 16th annual New Venture Challenge (NVC) finals took place on April 12. This high-energy public event filled Boulder Theater on an unseasonably warm spring evening, where the audience watched five startup ventures compete for a portion of $100K in prize money to help them reach the next step in their success.

The Distinguished Research Lectureship is among the highest honors bestowed by the faculty upon a CU Boulder colleague. Each year, the Research & Innovation Office (RIO) requests nominations and a faculty review panel recommends one or more faculty members as recipients. The deadline for nominations is Monday, May 22, 2023. Nominations should be submitted online.

Space research first began at CU Boulder in 1948, when an Air Force research lab contracted with the Department of Physics to study the Sun by launching instruments mounted on surplus WWII rockets. Fast forward to the present, and LASP, which has grown to about 700 employees, is celebrating its 75th anniversary.

For the seventh time, NASA has selected the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder) for the management and operations of the Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) Snow and Ice Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC).

Miller will discuss a variety of topics including her work on indoor air quality in our homes and the lessons learned about airborne disease transmission during the COVID-19 pandemic that are still broadly applicable. 鈥淚t will not be a technical lecture at all, and my hope is that people will leave with concrete ways to improve their health in relation to air pollution exposure,鈥� she said.
