Undergraduate students interested in materials research will get a boost at CU Boulder next summer thanks to a new Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) grant from NSF. The 10-week summer program pairs students from across the country with CU Boulder鈥檚 top researchers in the field.

Professor Joel Eaves (Chemistry) is part of an NSF-funded group of researchers who have created a new class of materials from inorganic silicon nanoparticles and a common hydrocarbon molecule. These materials have the potential to improve solar panel efficiency, medical imaging and even night vision goggles.

Chemists at CU Boulder have developed a new way to recycle a common type of plastic found in soda bottles and other packaging. The team鈥檚 method relies on electricity and some nifty chemical reactions, and it鈥檚 simple enough that you can watch the plastic break apart in front of your eyes.

Karan Dikshit, an alum of the Materials Science and Engineering Program, is the first author on a new paper in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces detailing new adhesive materials that not only allow for easy sticking and unsticking, but could eventually contribute to sustainability efforts around the globe.

鈥淓ntrepreneurs create value by addressing unmet needs in the marketplace,鈥� says Jeffrey Nytch, professor of composition and director of CU Boulder's Entrepreneurship Center for Music. 鈥淚n the arts, that means understanding the audience you鈥檙e trying to reach and creating works that speak to them in meaningful ways.鈥�

A new Research & Innovation Office (RIO) program is providing nearly $100K in combined funding to 19 projects that span disciplines ranging from music and art history to journalism and theatre and dance. This pilot opportunity was inspired by recognition of the essential role of the arts and humanities at CU Boulder.

As part of the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav), CU Boulder postdoc Joseph Simon is searching for a phenomenon known as the 鈥済ravitational wave background鈥�: giant ripples in space and time that owe their origins in part to supermassive black holes.

Taught by award winning faculty members at the Leeds School of Business's Deming Center for Entrepreneurship, Erick Mueller and Hunter Albright, this year's program focused on the core elements that create critical resiliency in every successful business venture, regardless of stage.

CU Boulder researcher Linda Watkins and CU startups Beryl Therapeutics Inc., Modendo Inc. and TissueForm Inc. are among 37 companies and researchers awarded Proof of Concept and Early-Stage Capital Retention grants through the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT).

NASA鈥檚 James Webb Space Telescope will soon get a new 鈥渟idekick鈥濃�攁 small but nimble satellite called MANTIS, which will be designed and built at LASP. Like that undersea animal, the spacecraft (about the size of a toaster oven) will be able to observe the night sky in the full range of UV light.
