College of Music professor Andrew Cooperstock will headline a New York City CU alumni event on May 13.

The music of Gershwin and the talents of a CU-Boulder professor and pianist will be in the spotlight this week in New York City.

On Wednesday evening, May 13, professor Andrew Cooperstock and his duo Opus Two are on the bill for An Evening of Gershwin. The event, hosted by the NYC Forever Buffs Alumni Chapter, will pay tribute to George Gershwin’s repertoire and celebrate the release of Opus Two’s CDĚýGershwin: Music for Violin and Piano.

Cooperstock says Gershwin and other 20th century composers have always interested him as a performer and a teacher. “Gershwin is an excellent example of an early crossover composer,” Cooperstock says. “He developed a personal, American sound from influences as varied as jazz, European classical, African-American spiritual, Jewish liturgical and so on.”

Cooperstock and violinist William Terwilliger will be joined at venue 54 Below by two members of the Broadway community, actress Ashley Brown and award-winning director Eric Stern.

A contingent of Boulder-area alumni will be attending the concert, including Mikhy Ritter. She says the cross-country trek will be worth it to spend the evening with New York area alumni, family and friends. “We decided to attend the concert because we knew we would regret it if we didn’t!”

Alumna and co-chair of the Music Advisory Board Becky Roser will be there, too. “Expanding connections to CU alumni is important for the College of Music. I see this as a terrific opportunity to meet alumni and celebrate their success.

“The camaraderie among students, faculty, staff and alumni makesĚýthe College a special place. The supportive environment is almost palpable.”

Special ticket packages have been created and are available through the CU-Boulder Alumni Association. Price is $40 for CU-Boulder alumni and $75 for CU staff, faculty and friends. Included in the ticket price are drinks and appetizers, and a signed CD.Ěý Ěý
