Premier period-instrument ensemble will play its first Boulder concert Feb. 13
BOULDER, Colo. — When the Venice Baroque Orchestra, one of the world’s premier period-instrument ensembles, takes the stage at Macky Auditorium on the CUBoulder campus Feb. 13, audiences can expect a full course of Vivaldi, followed by a feast of Boccherini
Cellist Mario Brunello will join the orchestra for the Boulder concert, one of just two mid-continent stops on the ensemble’s 2014 American tour, and its first-ever in Boulder. Brunello has played with some of the world’s most important orchestras, from the London Philharmonic to the Philadelphia Orchestra.
The Venice Baroque Orchestra was founded in 1997 by scholar and harpsichordist Andra Marcon and has garnered both critical and popular acclaim while performing in North America, Europe, South America and Asia. The ensemble’s discography includes the world premiere recording of “Andromeda Liberata” for Deutsche Grammophon, Metastasio’s “L’Olimpiade” and Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons.”
“One of the world’s most adventurous and dramatic period-instrument ensembles,” says National Public Radio.
The New York Times says the ensemble is “a superbly polished period-instrument group known for its fresh, zesty Vivaldi recordings.”
And The New Yorker says “the ensemble revels in the scruffy-elegant style of its home city, so its reputation in the concertos of such composers as Vivaldi, Geminiani and Porpora is, naturally, sterling.”
