Before joining the MENV program at CU, Laura worked as the Associate Director for the STEM Community Alliance Program (STEMCAP) at the University of Utah, where she brought local scientists, artists, and community leaders into youth detention centers to provide informal STEAM education. During her time at STEMCAP, Laura led various environmental science/studies programming series and developed a network of community partners to direct existing educational resources to marginalized youth. Laura believes in the power of environmental education as a form of environmental justice and has witnessed firsthand the impact of helping vulnerable communities better understand the human health effects posed by environmental issues in their neighborhoods.

Laura earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of Georgia before completing an M.S. in Environmental Humanities from the University of Utah, where she studied methods to increase the accessibility and inclusivity of environmental education. This work included creating place-based environmental education curricula for Salt Lake City youth. Laura is passionate about interweaving science, art, and the humanities to help communities holistically understand and engage with their environment and advocate for environmental health and justice. She is also passionate about responsible, sustainable outdoor recreation and is an avid trail runner and rock climber.
