Aspero Medical's patented Pillar™ Technology improves anchoring consistency in the GI tract, minimizing procedure time and enabling more complete procedures on the first attempt.

The University of Colorado Connection

Aspero Medical was founded in 2018 by Mark Rentschler (CU Boulder Biomedical, Mechanics of Materials, Robotics and Systems Design) and Steven Edmundowicz () to commercialize the first in a series of innovations that improve patient outcomes from gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopic procedures. While they set out to solve real-life problems for doctors like Edmundowicz, their work was only the beginning. Through their engagement with various Venture Partners at CU Boulder programs, they honed in on their value proposition and developed a series of additional solutions. With this information and several Advanced Industries Accelerator grants, they cofounded Aspero Medical. The company continued to develop a suite of products with the help of National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF) and Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT) grants. In 2023, the company secured clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market and sell its patented Ancora-SB small bowel balloon overtube for small bowel procedures.
