Renowned Researcher Jane Margolis Featured In CU's ATLAS Speaker Series

Jane Margolis, a social scientist who has worked to bridge the gender and minority gap in computer science and co-author of the widely acclaimed book, "Unlocking the Clubhouse: Women in Computing," will be the inaugural speaker in the ATLAS Speaker Series at the University of Colorado at Boulder at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, in room 100 of the new ATLAS building.

CU-Boulder Chancellor Peterson To Address Faculty Sept. 8 On Broad Campus Priorities

University of Colorado at Boulder Chancellor G.P. "Bud" Peterson will provide a glimpse of his broad goals and priorities for the campus in a speech on Friday, Sept. 8, in Old Main Chapel. The talk, which is open to the campus and public, begins at 8:15 a.m. following an informal breakfast at 7:30 a.m. on the Norlin Quad outside of Old Main on the CU-Boulder campus.

CU-Boulder Officials Clarify 'Two-Strikes' Alcohol Policy

The University of Colorado at Boulder's "two strikes" policy for enforcement of underage drinking has become an effective way for the campus to guide students, particularly freshmen, toward more responsible behavior, according to Jamal Ward, director of the Office of Judicial Affairs. Under the two strikes policy, adopted in fall 2004, students can be suspended after two underage drinking violations, but violations that harm other people are a primary focus of the policy's enforcement in 2006, Ward said.

CU Law School To Hold Remembrance Ceremony In Honor Of Sept. 11 Victims

At noon on Sept. 11, the University of Colorado at Boulder School of Law and the CU Law Alumni Board will hold a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at the new Wolf Law Building on the Boulder campus. The ceremony will recognize the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Organizers of the ceremony also will unveil a bronze plaque dedicated to the memory of CU alumni killed during the attacks.

Lilly Fellows In Media, Religion And Culture Named At CU-Boulder

The research field of media, religion and culture is the focus of three doctoral dissertation fellowships and one post-doctoral fellowship awarded by the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Colorado at Boulder for the 2006-07 academic year. Shazia Iftkhar of the University of Wisconsin, Christine Hoff Kraemer of Boston University and Montré Aza Missouri of the University of London each will receive a $12,000 stipend from the Lilly Endowment in Indianapolis as part of their doctoral dissertation fellowships.

CU administrators hope that good sportsmanship prevails both in the trenches and in the stands. CU-Boulder Encourages Parents To Talk To Their Teens About Alcohol Use

The University of Colorado at Boulder is taking part in a study to determine how helpful parent-teen talks are when it comes to alcohol use. All parents of incoming freshmen this fall received a handbook encouraging them to talk to their sons and daughters about alcohol use before they arrive on campus, according to Steve Bentley, director of the substance abuse program at CU-Boulder's Wardenburg Health Center. The study also will examine the best ways to prompt parents to have that difficult talk.
