Coach Prime video campaigns, campus magazines recognized in national awards

CU Boulder creative communications and advancement teams were recognized last month with four Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) awards.

The Best of CASE District VI Awards will be celebrated Feb. 2–4 at the District VI Annual Conference in Omaha. CASE is a nonprofit association of educational institutions that serves professionals in the field of educational advancement. It is the largest professional organization of its kind and encompasses alumni relations, communications, marketing and development for educational institutions such as universities and independent or private schools.

Winning CU Boulder entries include:

Category: Videos on a shoestring (promotional)
About the entry: The excitement of Deion Sanders' (Coach Prime’s) first home game, as well as some non-Athletics factors, surged CU Boulder’s digital presence past historic norms. This campaign—developed by Strategic Relations and Communications—seized upon this opportunity with an eye toward promoting CU Boulder’s research prowess and learning how research content would resonate with new audiences attracted to CU Boulder because of Coach Prime. The results of the campaign are being used to inform a broader reputational campaign that aims to expand awareness of CU Boulder’s top research areas: health, space, climate and quantum.

Category: Magazines – alumni/general interest: any institution type (printed once a year)
About the entry: This was a challenging year for our School of Education, following several heavy years for alumni-educators stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, societal injustices and increasing political pressure on educators. Consequently, this issue of Voices, the School of Education’s annual magazine for alumni and friends, featured wellbeing and some of the inspiring ways CU Boulder leaders are centering healing and wellness in their work nationwide and in Colorado. Voices is designed to inform, engage and involve readers by providing beautifully designed and topical content. The content showcases work representative of our commitments to democracy, diversity, equity and justice.

Category: Magazines – alumni/general interest: any institution type (printed once a year)
About this entry: When CU Boulder created the College of Media, Communication and Information in 2015, it charged the college’s leaders to not just teach those disciplines, but explore the areas where they overlap, to cultivate cutting-edge thought leadership and prepare students for new kinds of careers. The college magazine, CMCI Now, showcases how our students, faculty and alumni have confronted this brave new world and found ways to create impact. Those changes, and how our community navigated them, were a central theme of the fall 2023 edition and demonstrated how CMCI’s uniquely interdisciplinary focus offered valuable perspectives and insights on artificial intelligence, climate change and careers.

Category: Videos – promotional (short)
About this entry: The Advancement Marketing and Communications and Alumni Association teams created a once-in-a-lifetime video of the Forever Buffs community welcoming Coach Prime to CU Boulder through a collaborative partnership and the support of a freelance videographer. The creative partners attended an event just before the CU Boulder football spring game and invited attendees to express their excitement, welcome Coach Prime and cheer “Sko Buffs” as a way to kick off the school year and football season. Forever Buffs were excited to engage with a variety of props as the Marketing and Communications team videoed their distinctive messages. The final product was a montage hype video to build engagement and excitement among Forever Buffs, while welcoming Coach Prime.
