As things begin to wind down, I have been thinking about how special my first fall in Boulder has felt. There have been some moments for me that stand out, and the most memorable ones have been times where I was able to be in community with you all. Between move-in week and welcome activities, gameday huddles and countless other events, it has been so wonderful to connect with you and I look forward to more opportunities to meet in the spring.

With winter break starting soon, I encourage you to be intentional with how you use your time over the next few weeks. Whether you are in your first or final year at CU, acknowledge the hard work you put in this semester and find ways to celebrate. During my time in college, I loved to get together with friends in our dining hall to connect, laugh and have a good time before we left for break. I would also gather with my friends for a celebratory meal and a night out after we finished final exams. Granted, we did not have things like Snapchat or TikTok at that time, so making time to see each other and stay in touch was always a must. Making it through the semester is an accomplishment and an important milestone, so treat yourself—you deserve it!

In addition to honoring your achievements, be deliberate when it comes to prioritizing your rest and relaxation as you need and desire. What are some activities that bring you joy? What helps center you? What makes you feel energized? And again, what brings you joy? Do more of that, Buffs.

It is also common for many people this month to reflect on the past year and consider potential goals for 2024. After you have had a chance to recharge and reconnect with family and friends, take time to think back on your fall semester and make plans for spring. What were your defining moments? What feels like the right next step in your collegiate journey? What could enhance your experience in the spring? What would you like to achieve by the end of the academic year in May?

Whether you want to gain professional experience, improve your GPA or find a new way to get involved and build community, the Division of Student Affairs has resources and opportunities to help you reach your goals. The University Memorial Center (UMC) and Center for Community (C4C) both offer quiet places to study as well. As you navigate the lead up to final exams, I have some advice for you: please give yourself grace as you close out the semester. Do what settles you and allows you time to just “be” for a moment. Take a coffee or dessert break, call a loved one for a quick pep talk, grab a meal with friends or take a nap! Personally, I vote for the nap... twice. Whatever you need to do for you.

The Division of Student Affairs is here for you as you prepare to wrap things up. Be sure to visit colorado.edu/finals—this is your one-stop shop for getting organized and finding the information you need. Here you can review the final exams schedule, tips and campus resources. Check out the list of student events that allow you to take breaks, gather with fellow Buffs and fuel up for study sessions. Upcoming opportunities include Therapy Dogs on Dec. 12, Breakfast Boxes on Dec. 15 and Free Finals Week at The Rec from Dec. 15-20. You may not know this about me but I have two fur babies at home, Charlie and Baxter, and love animals, so you may see me visiting the therapy dogs when they are on campus next month!

A special CU Boulder tradition before finals that I encourage you to participate in is Late Night Breakfast. This event occurs each semester on the last day of classes. 鶹Ժ can stop by the UMC for a free, nourishing meal provided to you by Student Affairs staff. Late Night Breakfast will be Thursday, Dec. 14, starting at 7 p.m. I am looking forward to seeing you there and wishing you good luck on finals in person, and I may have some fun giveaways to hand out.

Buffs, we are all cheering you on and are here to help you succeed. Last week I had the chance to join our Center for Inclusion and Social Change for our National First-Generation Celebration Day. As the first in my family to go to college myself, connecting with our first-generation Buffs always means the world to me. I must also give a shout out to our Buffs women’s basketball team for beating Louisiana State University (LSU), the reigning national champions, in their season opening game. I can tell they have an exciting season ahead, as well as our men’s basketball team, and I am looking forward to cheering our student athletes on at the CU Events Center this year. With colorful early evening sunsets, a chill in the air and the start of basketball season, it is definitely feeling like November in Boulder.

Next week also provides a well-deserved chance to slow down, breathe and get centered before the last bit of the semester. I encourage you to use fall break to take care of yourself. What are your needs in this moment, and how can you tend to them? What is your favorite way to relax and recharge? Whether that is catching up on sleep, spending time with your community or doing an activity that brings you joy, make it a priority to practice self-care.

If you will be in Boulder over break, take advantage of the smaller crowds. The Rec Center will be open, offering the opportunity to stay active, meet others and try something new. You could organize a potluck with fellow Buffs or visit a favorite restaurant that may normally have a waitlist. Find ways to treat yourself and stay connected to your support system.

For those who are traveling over break, I wish you a safe journey and hope you enjoy your week with your family and friends. Quality time with those close to you can help you feel refreshed and motivated to come back and finish the year strong.

Wherever you may be over fall break, take time for yourself. You earned it!

Buffs, be well and I will connect with you soon when we return to campus.

Warmly,
Dr. D’Andra Mull
Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs

Whether you will be in Boulder for fall break or are traveling home, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Dr. D’Andra Mull encourages students to prioritize self-care next week.

Off

Traditional

0

On

White
Mon, 13 Nov 2023 19:51:34 +0000 Anonymous 2287 at /studentaffairs Buffs, take advantage of transformative opportunities /studentaffairs/2023/11/06/buffs-take-advantage-transformative-opportunities Buffs, take advantage of transformative opportunities Anonymous (not verified) Mon, 11/06/2023 - 12:47

Tags:

VCSA

Hi Buffs,
What a winter wonderland we had for a few days! Now that we have experienced our first snowfall and daylight saving time has ended, we are really feeling the changing of the seasons. And with fall break just around the corner, you have some well-deserved time off coming up. This is a great time to rest, recharge and reflect on your experience so far this academic year.

In your academic programs, you are gaining the skills and knowledge you need to achieve your post-graduation goals. Strengths like problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration and communication are qualities that employers look for in potential candidates and apply to all jobs and industries. Additionally, there are many options outside of the classroom from the Division of Student Affairs to amplify your learning, gain professional skills and prepare for life after college. These include but are not limited to:

Joining a leadership program, like CU GOLD or the Journey Leaders team.

Participating on a student board or committee, like the Dean of 鶹Ժ Leadership & Values Council.

Getting involved with CU Student Government.

Volunteering in your community or taking an Alternative Breaks trip with your peers.

Working a part-time job on campus is a great way to get hands-on experience, develop foundational skills and learn more about yourself. You can find positions that match your interests in many of our departments. There are other benefits to working on campus as well. First, student employment at our university offers flexibility. Many student jobs allow you to work around your class schedule and other commitments, and adjust your workload during final exams. In addition, on-campus employment allows you to make valuable connections with your co-workers and supervisor. I know many students who have become good friends with their fellow Buffs at their part-time job. Your supervisor can become a mirror for you and serve as a mentor, and potentially a professional reference later.

When it comes to your plans for spring, I strongly encourage you to seek out ways you can continue to grow that complement what you are accomplishing in your courses. One of the perks of being a Buff is the variety of transformative opportunities available to you, from your first year to your final year at CU.

Whether it is an on-campus job, volunteering, joining a leadership program or participating on a student board, these transformative opportunities can lead to a defining moment that shapes your college experience and influences your future. You can use your fall break to explore options and take advantage this spring.

Buffs, I truly hope you have a safe and relaxing fall break. I hope to see you around as we “let the good times roam!”

As the leaves change, it signals our transition to autumn and its coming months. This is also a time when you may be starting to think about what spring will bring. Before you do that, take a moment to think about how far you have come thus far. What are you proud of? What are some of your most defining moments this semester? What will you do differently next term? What traditions have you participated in that have made your CU experience special? How have you contributed to your Buff community? What is one challenge you overcame?

Course registration starts soon, and I encourage you to reflect on your academic journey so far. Taking time to think about where you are and create intentions for the future can help you make the most of your time here at CU Boulder. One benefit of being a Buff is that you get to shape your academic journey to match your individual needs. You could consider changing your degree, adding a second major or minor, completing a certificate program or finding a student group focused on your interests. As you explore your options, know that you are not alone in figuring things out. Our Career Services team is here to help you determine your goals and prepare for life after graduation, in addition to your academic advisor.

As you consider your plans for spring, know there are many ways to enrich your semester and learn outside the classroom.
