Daniel Amarelo was the recipient of the Portuguese Luso American Foundation/Torre do Tombo short-term grant to develop research in Portugal. He will be working on "Ideas about Language in Contemporary Portugal: National Identity and Globalization".

The Department is pleased to award several Summer Research Grants, the following students have shared their plans:
Representations of Linguistic Authenticity, Language Contact, and Raciolinguistic Ideologies: the Lusophone Migrant Community in Santiago de Compostela. With this sociolinguistic proposal,听Daniel听Amarelo听aims to study the contact, representations and ideologies of languages and varieties (Spanish and Galician-Portuguese in their different forms) in contemporary Galiza through the Portuguese-speaking migrant community.
Jonat谩n Guerra: In this research I am going to examine how the heterosexual relations between men are represented in contemporary Ecuadorian literature especially when these relations result in violence against women. Furthermore, I am going to explore how these representations are reflected in social media discourses in Ecuadorian contexts.听
Brandon Grenier:听My research plan is to study the ways that English/Spanish bilinguals alternate between languages by creating a bilingual corpus. By allowing speakers to switch freely between their languages I hope to create a natural corpus that accurately reflects the way speakers truly use their language.

Jake Reagan, a recently graduated Spanish Major, was awarded CU's Thomas Jefferson award听and is CU's 2020 Rhodes Scholar.
Peru麓s National Library asked Dr. Peter Elmore听to deliver a lecture on literary representations of Lima in the works of Julio Ram贸n Ribeyro and other members of the so-called Fifties Generation. The lecture was broadcast live on Facebook and via Zoom. On August 5th, he was pleasantly surprised to know that 6,200 people watched it on Facebook and an additional 500 attended via Zoom. He听stressed --as he always does-- his pride for and听affiliation with the department of Spanish and Portuguese at CU-Boulder. Link 听

- Keira Hook has been award the Anna Fair Scholarship in Arts & Sciences in recognition of her superior academic achievements and her goal of effecting social change through a 鈥渕ore robust understanding of Hispanic Language and Culture鈥�.
- Zujey Miranda-Gandarilla has won the Anna Fair Award in Arts & Sciences in recognition of her strong academic performance and her desire to contribute positively to society. Our nominating colleague identified her as a 鈥渂right person with unsurpassed work habits鈥�.
- Landon Helwig was awarded a听Katherine Jacob Lamont scholarship in Arts & Sciences in recognition of his strides in learning Spanish and dedication to Spanish speaking communities. He received high praise from two separate department members for his performance in our program.
- Nicole Sittner won a Katherine Jacob Lamont scholarship in Arts & Sciences. She has demonstrated outstanding academic performance generally and was characterized as showing 鈥渦nsurpassed鈥� ability specifically in Spanish coursework.听 sd

In Oct 16, 2019, Fernanda Iwasaki presented her book Historias de Superh茅roes at the 2018-2019 Engaged Graduate 麻豆淫院 Scholars Final Showcase, organized by the Office of Outreach and Engagement at CU Boulder. As an Engaged Arts and Humanities Scholar, Fernanda applied tools of her background in literary studies to develop this community-engaged partnership project. She worked with Columbine Elementary School Latinx students and together they wrote the stories of the superheroes in their families. Stop by the front office to see the finished product!

Prof. Andr茅s Prieto has been awarded a LEAP Associate Professor Growth Grant (2019-2020). He will use the grant to conduct research in Rome during the summer.

Senior Instructor听Anne Becher has won the 2019听Southwest Conference on Language Teaching's Excellence in Classroom Teaching award at the Post-Secondary level.
Anne Becher and Nina Molinaro have received the CU Dialogues Faculty Fellowship for 2019. They will use the fellowship to听contribute to the existing community of CU Dialogues faculty and staff, study the dialogic method in detail, and implement Dialogues into SPAN 3010 (Advanced Rhetoric and Composition).听Link here!

Taiko Haessler was awarded the Provost's Fellowship for the University Libraries for Spring semester, 2019. During her time as Fellow, she will work with an academic librarian mentor to complete a project within CU's library collection and its affiliate collections. Her work will result in the creation of an extensive bibliography of medieval women philosophers.听
Fernanda Iwasaki听has been awarded the听Florence Husted Lowe and F. Rex Lowe Dissertation Fellowship听by听the Arts and Humanities Dissertation Fellowship Selection Committee. In 2019-20, Fernanda will be working on her dissertation project, tentatively titled听El mon贸logo descentrado: cuerpo, brevedad y performance en la narrativa latinoamericana contempor谩nea.
Fernanda Iwasaki听has received a stipend from the Office for Outreach and Engagement to fund her community-engaged project 鈥淗istorias de Superh茅roes.鈥� Fernanda is a 2018-19 EAH scholar and is currently working with a bilingual local school to support and empower their Latinxs students.
