Department of Naval Science
The Department of Naval Science at the University of Colorado Boulder is a department within the Office of Undergraduate Education and is responsible for managing the Navy Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) program and the students (Midshipmen) in it. Our staff is a team of dedicated active duty Navy and Marine Corps instructors, contractors, and civilians working in unison to train, educate, and commission University of Colorado students into the United States Navy and Marine Corps. Our offices are located right in the heart of Boulder's campus - Folsom Field! Specifically, we are located between Gates 5 and 6 (location).
The responsibilities and services we provide to our students include...
- Scholarships and Awards - not all students enter our program with the 4-Year National NROTC Scholarship. Our office helps qualified students (College Programmers) interested in commissioning into the Navy or Marine Corps prepare for follow-on Scholarship Boards (full tuition) to include the 3 year, 2 year, and Advanced Standing (1 year) scholarships. We also have the ability to give uniquely qualified Midshipmen in our unit an On the Spot Scholarship. In addition to the overarching NROTC Scholarship, our Midshipmen are eligible for specific scholarships awarded by military and leadership organizations, CU NROTC Alumni, and veteran associations. - Leadership Development - our students leave our program with a strong foundation in leadership aided by our required leadership-focused curriculum, trainings, and guest speakers. The routine schedule of our program is largely student-run, which provides our Midshipmen critical experience in leadership roles working alongside active duty students and coordinating with our active duty staff who have a combined 70+ years of leadership experience.
- Naval Science Curriculum - The Department of Naval Science is responsible for several university-accredited courses. Our staff develops and presents the curriculum to our Midshipmen and any other CU student who wishes to enroll during normal class periods. Courses provided include Leadership and Management, Ethics, Naval History, Evolution of Warfare, and more!
- Career Preparation and Training - a career in the Navy or Marine Corps is challenging. We prepare our students for the exceptional rigors they will face in their near future through weekly trainings and military labs. We cover topics like general officership, land and sea navigation, platoon fundamentals, flight training preparation, damage control, and more!
- Human Resource Administration and Supply - all of our students' accompanying paperwork for scholarships to include medical requirements, financial information, security clearances, travel expenses, and uniforms is handled in-house by our HRA and Supply Tech team!
