Macky Gallery

Now at the Macky Gallery: Andrew Barker
January 9th to March 5th
Andrew Barker creates intricate, illustrative works that are themed around the flora and fauna of the Rocky Mountains and the American West. His primary approach combines ink linework with watercolor washes, but will occasionally incorporate gouache and colored pencil. He works both on traditional watercolor paper and wood surfaces.
The subject matter that Andrew explores is driven by an appreciation for the natural world, and his concern with climate change, population growth, biodiversity loss, and defaunation. He celebrates the natural world through depictions of conflict, death, rebirth, and the struggles and joys of existence that are shared among all living beings. Stylistically, Andrew is influenced by mid-century commercial art, tattoo design, the golden age of naturalist illustration, and early 20th-century Japanese printmakers and watercolor artists.
Andrew studied art at Oregon State University, and practiced in design for two decades before transitioning into a full-time artist. Boulder, CO has been his home since 2013 and he works out of his studio in the NoBo Art District.
Opening Reception: Saturday, January 25 from 4 to 7 pm.
