Javernick-Will, Liel (CU Boulder), and Koschmann (CU Boulder) awarded NSF Grant “Building Capacity for Safer Post-disaster Shelter"

Associate Professor Amy Javernick-Will, along with Co-PIs Abbie Liel (Structural Engineering) and Matt Koschmann (Communication), received a grant from the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Humans, Disasters, and the Built Environment (HDBE) program to study post-disaster shelter reconstruction programs in the Philippines and Puerto Rico. With this three-year, $500,000 grant the team will explore household perceptions of the safety of their shelter, engineering assessments of shelter safety, conflicts between household perceptions and engineering assessments, and communication strategies for post-disaster training programs to address these conflicts. This research aims to transform post-disaster shelter reconstruction and lead to more resilient communities. PhD students Casie Venable and Briar Goldwyn will be working on this project in the Philippines and Puerto Rico, respectively. Congratulations team!
