Research
Quantum Sensors and Devices such as atomic clocks, atomic gyroscopes, and optically-pumped
magnetometers have reached very good performance, but often in complicated systems that
cannot be used outside benign laboratory environments. My research focuses on developing
miniaturized quantum sensors and systems, with the aim to produce manufacturable, high-
performance sensors. The use of microfabrication technologies and novel packaging processes
are a central component in our approaches. The interdisciplinary research includes
investigations of novel spectroscopic methods, frequency control, and metrology,
microfabrication and manufacturing technologies, and magnetic field simulations. New sensors
and systems are developed in close collaboration with users in the fields of non-invasive
imaging of brain and heart functions, non-destructive testing, and surveillance from unmanned
vehicles.
