Student Awards

The Department of Computer Science awards several student honors each year. All recipients below are graduate students unless otherwise indicated.

This award was established in 2010 through a gift made by one of Dr. Slutz’ former students, Xiaodong Zhang (MSCompSci’85, PhD’89) to annually recognize students in computer science who have established a record of academic excellence and/or technical research and innovation. In 2011, Dean Robert H. Davis presented him with the Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award, which honors outstanding graduates and friends of the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

The Department of Computer Science has instituted a "Departmental Summer Research Fellowship" to help students who have been a Teaching Assistant for 2-4 CONTINUOUS semesters, hindering their research progress. This is awarded so that the student can focus on research during the summer months and make some progress. Preference will be given to those students without any other University appointments. Selected student will be receiving approximately $6K each for summer.

Dave Kasik (MCompSci'72) grew up in Denver and started computer science in 1968 as an undergrad at Johns Hopkins. While at Hopkins, Dave discovered computer animation and made films; computer graphics has been his career focus ever since. In 1970, Dave applied to CU and was accepted where he became a teaching assistant in the first formal Computer Science Department master's class.  Dave said, “CU gave me the opportunities to explore and push boundaries.” Kasik fellowship has been instituted by Dave Kasik and awards $2,500.00 to one CSEN graduate student (PhD, MS OR MSCPS) from geographic areas (both domestic and international) and socioeconomic backgrounds that are historically underrepresented in the Department and students who are active in supporting others. Service to the department will also be considered by the committee.
