This research study was one of the pilot studies that led to the establishment of the Crown institute. This study is investigating the development of the capacity for mindfulness across childhood and underlying cognitive and perceptual skills. A total of 100 children ages 9-13 participated in laboratory sessions that included a series of mindfulness questionnaires, executive function tasks, and awareness tasks, along with measures of social desirability, meta-cognition, and previous exposure to mindfulness practices. Children also completed an at-home intervention consisting of daily guided mindfulness exercises from a popular mobile app, and then returned to the laboratory for a follow-up session 7-10 days later. We are currently analyzing data focused on children's internal awareness, external awareness, and self-reported mindfulness, and the effectiveness of the short-term mindfulness intervention.
