Industry Job Search Seminar Series

Starting September 3, join Cat Diebel-WilsonÌýon Tuesdays from 2-3 p.m. for a virtual seminar on the non-academic internship and job searchÌýfor graduate students and postdocs.

Over four weekly meetings, we will discuss how to begin the non-academic internship or job search, with topics including how to draft industry resumes and cover letters, tips for finding and evaluating job postings, networking strategy, how to ask for professional references,Ìýhow to interview and how to negotiate your job offer.Ìý

Each session is offered live and includes content presentation, resourcesÌýand an opportunity for questions and discussion. This seminar will help graduate students and postdocs understand the non-academic job market and application process, whether they are planning to pursue a career in industry or just want to keep their options open.

Week 1: Resumes and Networking
Learn how to draft an industry resume and formulate a networking strategy.

Week 2: Job Search Basics
This session will help you understand the steps and timeline of an industry job search. We will also read through a real job posting and outline the process of determining what to emphasize when tailoring your resume and writing an impactful cover letter.

Week 3: Cover Letters and LinkedIn
Cover letters can feel like a mystery: What should you say? What do they look like? This session will explain the impact that a well-written cover letter can have and supply information and resources for crafting a persuasive cover letter, as well as the basics of setting up a LinkedIn profile or other online professional presence.

Week 4: Interviews and Negotiation
A discussion of crucial interviewing skills: How to prepare and practice for your interview, common interview questions and how to respond to them, and how to negotiate your job offer.

Academic Job Search Seminar Series

This four-week virtual seminar is aimed at third- or fourth-year graduate students who are planning to be on the academic job market this application cycle or next, or early-career graduate students who want a thorough understanding of what comprises the academic job dossier. Grad students are encouraged to attend all four sessions as each week builds upon the last, but each week’s educational content portion may be attended as a standalone workshop.

Week 1: How to formulate an application plan, research your target institution, request letters that will support your applications and more.

Week 2: Building an effective CV. How to write and lay-out the basic eight sections and possible additional sections to include.

Week 3: What information to include in the job letter and how to tailor it. How to write a diversity statement, including starting points and addressing specific diversity concerns.

Week 4: How to structure research and teaching statements, what to include and some starting points. Plus, the five questions of the standard academic interview.
