Materials Science & Engineering

CU Boulder鈥檚 Materials Science and Engineering Program offers you an interdisciplinary education exploring science at the intersection of advanced chemistry, biology, engineering and physics.

As an engineer who specializes in materials science, you will study and develop solutions to some of the world鈥檚 most pressing issues, from health care and energy to advanced computing and electronics.

Contribute to meaningful projects. Faculty and students in the Materials Science and Engineering Program have gone on to found 11 startups and spinoffs.

Learn from award-winning researchers. Program faculty includes eight Materials Research Society award winners and multiple National Academy members.

Develop critical teaching skills. The two-year Teaching Fellows Program prepares PhD students and postdoctoral associates for a successful academic career.

  • Must complete 30 credit hours of coursework
  • Must declare a track by second semester
  • Must take 4 approved track-specific courses

Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, Chemical and Biological Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering, and Accelerated Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering

  • Open to currently enrolled CU Boulder undergraduate students
  • May take up to 12 credit hours of graduate courses as an undergraduate
  • Can double count 6 credit hours toward BS and MS
