From the Chair

Dear Friends of Women and Gender Studies,

We鈥檝e had a busy couple of months here at the Cottage, hiring a new faculty member in the area of race/ethnicity. We will welcome Maisam Alomar to the department this coming fall semester. She is currently finishing up her PhD in ethnic studies at the University of California San Diego. New WGST professor Kristie Soares joined us this January. Both a professor and a performance artist, Dr. Soares鈥檚 work explores issues of queerness in Caribbean and Latinx communities. We鈥檙e excited to welcome these new members of our WGST community! And they are arriving just in time鈥攚e now enjoy 145 WGST majors and minors.

Lorena Aguilera Santana (WGST '18) wins Van Ek Award

Lorena Aguilera Santana, a double-major in women and gender studies and sociology, has been chosen as one of this year's Jacob Van Ek Scholars, awarded by the College of Arts and Sciences at CU Boulder for outstanding academic achievement and contributions to the university.

We were honored to host Inderpal Grewal, professor and chair in the Program in Women鈥檚, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Yale University, for a presentation in the Cottage on March 13th. Grewal is an influential feminist scholar who helped found the field of transnational feminist cultural studies.

Lucile Buchanan Jones

In Honor of Lucile

100 years ago, Lucile Berkeley Buchanan became the first African American woman to earn a degree at CU Boulder -- but she was not allowed to accept her diploma on stage with her classmates, and not included in the yearbook. Born in 1884 to former slaves Lavina and James Fenton Buchanan, Lucile earned her degree in German with a minor in English and became a teacher -- living to the age of 105, without ever receiving recognition of her academic achievements from CU Boulder.

Soares explores issues of queerness in Caribbean and Latinx communities both through her research and work as a performance artist.

New WGST Faculty: Maisam Alomar

The Department of Women and Gender Studies is pleased to announce that Maisam Alomar will join our department faculty as an assistant professor in fall 2018. Alomar is currently a PhD candidate in the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of California, San Diego.

Call for Submissions: Excellence in Inclusion Award

Submissions are now being accepted for the Women and Gender Studies Excellence in Inclusion Award, which recognizes outstanding student projects (research or creative works) that explore issues pertaining to diversity and inclusion at CU Boulder or in the U.S. more generally. This award is designed to help foster an inclusive and welcoming campus climate at CU Boulder for students of all backgrounds, including first-generation students, minority students, women, LGBTQ, and other historically underrepresented groups in the field of education. Winners will be presented with a certificate and a $500 cash award. Deadline for submissions is Wednesday, April 25th. For more information see www.colorado.edu/wgst/inclusion-award.

You're Invited!: 2018 WGST Commencement

We invite you to join us Thursday, May 10th, 2018 at 12:00 noon to recognize the Women and Gender Studies graduating class of 2018, our majors, minors, certificate students, and scholarship awardees.

We look forward to having parents, relatives and friends gather together in the historic Old Main Chapel on the CU-Boulder campus, as the graduates and awardees process from the Gates Woodruff Cottage across the Norlin Quad to Old Main.

Degrees will be conferred to our majors, and we also recognize students who have completed the minor in women and gender studies, as well as the certificates in Global Gender and Sexuality Studies and LGBTQ Studies. Several graduate students will also be recognized for their completion of the Graduate Certificate in Women and Gender Studies.听

Scholarship awards will be presented to students, including the Joanne Easley Arnold Outstanding Senior Award, the Jean Dubofsky Scholarship, and the Lucile Berkeley Buchanan Scholarship. Each of these awardees is presented with a certificate, given a monetary award, and their names are added to memorial plaques that hang in the Cottage.

A catered reception will follow in the Heritage Center, on the third floor of Old Main. Please contact the WGST office at 303-492-8923 or wgst@colorado.edu with any questions about the ceremony, or any accessibility needs you may have.
