CU Bus-Pass Program Wins EPA Award

The Environmental Protection Agency will present an award to the University of Colorado聮s Environmental Center next week for its bus-pass program, which gives CU聮s 25,000 students free access to local RTD and Hop and Skip routes to encourage them to use alternative transportation. Way to Go! awards are given to innovative transportation programs that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. CU is the only university to receive the award this year. Student program administrator Adam Krom will accept the award on Oct. 29 in Saint Louis.

Sandstone Pillars In New Mexico Identified As Fossil Termite Nests

More than 100 sandstone pillars in New Mexico reaching heights of 20 feet above ground appear to be giant, fossilized termite nests roughly 155 million years old, according to new research by a team of Colorado scientists. 聯These probably are the world聮s largest trace fossils,聰 said University of Colorado at Boulder research associate Stephen Hasiotis, who led the study. Trace fossils -- the tracks, trails and burrows left by organisms -- help scientists reconstruct past biodiversity conditions and ancient ecosystems, he said.

Memorial Events Planned For Biologist Keith Porter

The University of Colorado at Boulder will sponsor a program of memorial events Friday, Oct. 24, in honor of Keith Roberts Porter, founder and first chair of CU聮s department of molecular, cellular and developmental biology. Porter died May 2, in Bryn Mawr, Pa., from complications of Parkinson聮s disease. He was 84.

Czech Senator To Speak At CU-Boulder On Oct. 23

Chairman of the Czech Republic聮s Senate Foreign Relations Committee and former ambassador to the United States, Michael Zantovsky, is scheduled to give a public lecture on NATO聮s enlargement Thursday, Oct. 23, at 3 p.m. in the Old Main Chapel of the University of Colorado at Boulder.

New CU-Boulder Geology Building To Be Dedicated On Oct. 30

EDITORS: A media tour of the Benson Earth Sciences Building led by Miller will be at 10 a.m. Oct. 28 starting at the building聮s west entrance. A complete schedule of Oct. 30 dedication events is attached. A new $14.5 million geology building at the University of Colorado at Boulder should help change outdated perceptions about geologists, says department chair Gifford Miller. Contrary to what many people believe, modern geology isn't done just by people in khaki pants banging on rocks with a hammer, he says.

CU-Boulder Kicks Off Campaign To Benefit Colorado Non-Profits

CU-Boulder faculty and staff are being encouraged to 聯Slam Dunk Our CCC Goal!聰 by continuing to show strong support for the annual Colorado Combined Campaign as the campus kicks off its ninth year. The CCC gets underway on campus Oct. 20. The Colorado Combined Campaign is a state-wide program for channeling employee contributions to more than 600 Colorado charities. Last year the campus raised $145,000 for the campaign.

Visiting Speaker To Address Gender, Class and Race

The Women聮s Studies Program at the University of Colorado at Boulder will host an address by leading black feminist sociologist Patricia Hill Collins on Oct. 29. Collins will speak on 聯Moving Beyond Gender: Race, Class and Scientific Knowledge,聰 at 7:30 p.m. in Old Main Chapel. The lecture is free and open to the public. A reception will be held in the CU Heritage Center following the presentation.

Tabolt Considers Alternatives For Funding Proposed Eco Pass

Paul Tabolt, vice chancellor for administration at the University of Colorado at Boulder, is reviewing additional options for funding CU-Boulder聮s proposed ECO Pass after receiving dozens of comments for and against the plan. Tabolt decided today to ask the ECO Pass Project Team to bring additional funding ideas for his consideration. He made the decision in response to faculty objections and a Boulder Faculty Assembly (BFA) resolution calling for additional evaluation.

College Of Business Hosts Behavioral Decision-Making Camp October 14-15

Scholars who study behavioral decision-making will attend a marketing camp at the University of Colorado at Boulder this week to present research and discuss trends. The camp, sponsored by CU and coordinated by marketing professors Dilip Soman and Dipankar Chakravarti, is a precursor to the national Association for Consumer Research conference in Denver. It begins Tuesday evening at the Boulder Broker Inn at 30th Street and Baseline Road and resumes at 8:40 a.m. Wednesday.
