CU-Boulder Student Explains Heritage Through Navajo Basketmaking Exhibit

Growing up on the Navajo reservation in northeast Arizona, Rita Cordalis was like most other children there who didn聮t grasp the significance of their cultural traditions as they grew up in their midst. Now a student in the University of Colorado聮s Museum Studies graduate program, Cordalis has found in the Navajo tradition of basketmaking a language that tells the story of her people. 聯To me, it聮s important to tell the story of the baskets,聰 Cordalis says. 聯Even among the Navajo people, it聮s not a story that聮s told often.聰

CU-Boulder Releases Report On Ineligible Player

The University of Colorado at Boulder released a report today on the outcome of its investigation into the participation of an ineligible football player in the fall 1997 football season. In the report provided to the Big 12 Conference, the university concluded the participation by student-athlete Darren M. Fisk was an inadvertent violation of NCAA Bylaw 14.2.1. Under a fixed penalty clause of the NCAA and the Big 12 conference, the university agreed to forfeit all victories in the fall 1997 season.

CU-Boulder Geology Professor Helped IMAX Crew Get Everest Story

The IMAX film crew that documented life and death on Mount Everest relied on the expertise of CU-Boulder geology Professor Roger Bilhan over an 18-month period to help them get the science right. 聯Everest,聰 which premieres March 13 at the IMAX Theater in the Denver Museum of Natural History, was filmed by a crew led by David Breashears of Boulder.

Associate Law Dean To Chair Legal Aid Society

Daniel Vigil, associate dean of the University of Colorado at Boulder School of Law, has been elected chairman of the board of directors of the Legal Aid Society of Metropolitan Denver. The non-profit corporation was founded in 1925 to provide free legal representation in civil matters to low-income residents in the Denver metropolitan area. Since the early 1980s, the organization also has served clients in 11 rural mountain counties in northwestern Colorado.

CU, CSU To Forge High School Links To Teach Japanese More Effectively

The University of Colorado and Colorado State University have teamed up with two Colorado high schools to create a statewide model for learning Japanese. The Modern Language Association awarded a grant of nearly $6,000 to the universities to work with Eaglecrest High School in Aurora and Boulder High School over the next two years. It was one of eight such awards made nationally.

Astronomer John Stocke To Explore Navajo Skies At Fiske Planetarium

Navajo star and constellation myths, including the Navajo story of how the stars were created, will be the subject of the next live astronomy presentation or 聯star talk聰 at Fiske Planetarium on the campus of the University of Colorado at Boulder. 聯Navajo Skies聰 will be presented by CU astronomer John Stocke at 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 6, and repeated at 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 11.

CU Celebrates International Women's Week

The International Women聮s Alliance at CU-Boulder is hosting three workshops a day, March 3 through March 6, during International Women聮s Week, which began Sunday with a keynote speech by Winona LaDuke, an internationally acclaimed Native American and environmental activist. The workshops are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in conference rooms 158 and 159, located in the University Memorial Center.

David And Frances Hawkins Receive Gamow Lecture Award At CU-Boulder

Longtime Boulder residents David and Frances Hawkins have been named the second recipients of the George Gamow Memorial Lecture Award at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The award honors the CU-Boulder scientists who have "made the most significant contribution to the public's understanding of science." The Hawkins received the award at the 33rd George Gamow Memorial Lecture on March 3.

An update on the state of affirmative action and some implications for the University of Colorado at Boulder will be presented March 13 at the third annual Chancellor聮s Diversity Summit, "Beyond the Choir." Activities will run from 8:40 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Dal Ward Athletic Center and are open to all CU-Boulder students, faculty and staff.
