CU-Boulder Names Director Of New Norlin Scholars Program

Michael C. Grant, professor of environmental, population and organismic biology at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has been selected to head up a new undergraduate education program aimed at highly motivated students with strong academic or creative abilities. The appointment, made by CU-Boulder Chancellor Richard L. Byyny, was approved last week by CU President John C. Buechner.

Fred Glover, MediaOne professor at the College of Business and Administration at CU-Boulder, has received the 1998 John Von Neumann Theory Prize from the Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences. The prize, named in honor of mathematician and computer pioneer John Von Neumann, is awarded annually to the individual who has made fundamental, sustained contributions to theory in operations research and the management sciences.

CU-Boulder Announces Start Of Pilot Community Education Program In Montrose

The University of Colorado at Boulder and the City of Montrose announced July 31 that the university will pilot an interdisciplinary educational program that will bring a wide range of programs and special events to Montrose and surrounding communities. Called "CU in Residence," the project will offer everything from K-12 teacher, student and parent education to programs for business and civic leaders, senior groups and the cultural and performing arts.

International Combustion Conference Aug. 3 To Aug. 7 To Feature Astronaut

More than 1,000 researchers from around the world including an astronaut who conducted fire experiments in space will meet in Boulder Aug. 3 to Aug. 7 for the 27th International Symposium on Combustion. Co-sponsored by the University of Colorado at Boulder's College of Engineering and Applied Science and the Colorado School of Mines, the conference will showcase the most up-to-date findings in combustion research. The meeting, held every two years and which rotates between the United States and Europe, will be held at CU-Boulder.

CU-Boulder, K-12 Teachers Teaming Up For Watershed Study Workshop

Twenty-one high school teachers from Colorado and other states will take on an unusual research project from Aug. 2 to Aug. 7, spending a week with scientists studying the effects of human activities in the Boulder Creek watershed. Sponsored by the University of Colorado at Boulder-based Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, the workshop will allow the teachers to conduct hands-on research on issues that affect the daily lives of Boulder County residents.

Henderson, a political science doctoral candidate from Spartanburg, S.C., will study Russia's developing women's movement and the role the West plays in shaping such movements.

W.M. Keck Foundation Grant Funds $962,000 Optical Lab At CU-Boulder

University of Colorado President John Buechner and Chancellor Richard L. Byyny today announced receipt of a $962,000 grant awarded for the W.M. Keck Optical Measurement Laboratory to be located in JILA, a research and teaching institute on the Boulder campus. Funding is from the W.M. Keck Foundation of Los Angeles, one of the nation's largest philanthropic organizations. Established in 1954 by the late William Myron Keck, founder of the Superior Oil Company, the Foundation's grantmaking is focused primarily on breakthrough research in science, engineering and medicine.
