At least two major street improvement projects are affecting traffic flow in Boulder, but University of Colorado students, faculty and staff can learn more about lane closures and other changes by logging onto two city Web sites.

The projects, scheduled to be finished by next summer, are aimed at improving traffic flow, repairing infrastructure, creating bike underpasses and implementing other multimodal upgrades, said city spokeswoman Noreen Walsh.

One project is unfolding at the intersection of Arapahoe Avenue and Foothills Parkway, and the other at Baseline Road and 27th Way. Next week, a construction detour likely will be put in place at Arapahoe and Foothills so workers can relocate streetlights, and through lanes may be reduced to two.

Because both projects will entail road narrowing and reduced speeds, "Folks might want to seek alternative routes," Walsh advised.

The city of Boulder has several Web-based tools that could make life easier for the CU-Boulder community. Commuters can visit and to view city cone zone maps, read in-depth reports about projects, obtain weekly updates, or sign up for e-mail alerts that will keep them abreast of the latest lane and street closures and other changes.

"We always encourage people to consider using an alternative to the single-occupant vehicle when traveling to campus, and it is especially important when construction makes commuting even more difficult," said Casey Jones, director of CU-Boulder's parking and transportation services.
