Before they begin classes, new students at the University of Colorado at Boulder will participate in a variety of activities starting Aug. 21 including biking and hiking tours, movies, a welcome convocation with new Chancellor G.P. "Bud" Peterson and a "Global Jam" with food and music from around the world.
The activities are designed to give students a chance to get acquainted with the campus and surrounding community before fall semester begins Aug. 28. These events are in addition to the usual array of orientation sessions that cover the details of class registration, policies and student services at each college. Events include:
l Residence hall move-in will begin at 8 a.m. on Aug. 21 for transfer students, 7 a.m. on Aug. 22 for freshmen attending the last orientation session and 9 a.m. on Aug. 24 for freshmen who attended June or July orientation sessions. On Aug. 22-23, residence halls will organize evening social activities for new students.
l A bike tour of the campus and community bike path network will be held Aug. 26 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., meeting at the CU Bike Station, east of the University Memorial Center. A picnic will follow the tour.
l Tours of the campus recycling facility, where students process five tons of material each day, will be offered Aug. 26 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
l An Aug. 24 barbeque for international students, scholars and families will be held 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Boulder's Martin Park.
l The Student Recreation Center and the Residence Hall Association present "Ice and Dice" Aug. 24 from 8:30 p.m. to midnight. Â鶹ÒùÔº can ice skate, use the rock climbing gym and win prizes playing casino games. All activities are free.
l CU-Boulder Chancellor G.P. "Bud" Peterson will welcome all new students Aug. 25 at a mandatory convocation at Folsom Field, from 11:30 a.m. to noon.
l Following the chancellor's convocation Aug. 25, the "Golden Buffalo" Marching Band will lead participants to Farrand Field, where a "Global Jam" will be held from noon to 2 p.m. New students will join staff and faculty to enjoy gourmet food and entertainment from around the world.
l Live music, casino games, free food and prizes are planned at the University Memorial Center's Welcome Fest, Aug. 25 from 8 p.m. to midnight.
l Late-night movies under the stars at Farrand Field will begin at 11 p.m. featuring "The Da Vinci Code" on Aug. 25 and "The Breakup" on Aug. 26.
l The Herd, the student arm of the CU-Boulder Alumni Association, will host a hike from the Koenig Alumni Center to the third Flatiron Aug. 26 at 9 a.m., to be followed by a free lunch.
l A bungee run, inflatable games and free food will be part of the Residence Hall Association's new student welcome carnival on Aug. 26 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the Quad Residence Hall lawn.
l Farrand Field is the site of the Program Council Welcome Back Concert at 6 p.m., Aug. 26, to be followed by a late-night movie at 11 p.m.
l Representatives from Wardenburg Health Center will be on the center's north lawn Aug. 22-24 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. offering cold care kits and giveaways, health information and assistance with immunizations and student health insurance plan selection.
l Hour-long Army ROTC welcome and open house events, including a continental breakfast and various activities will take place Aug. 25 at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. inside Folsom Field, gate three, second floor. For more information call (303) 492-6495.
l Welcome events and tours are planned at Career Services Aug. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Willard Hall's northwest lawn, the Environmental Center on Aug. 25 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in UMC room 355, and Disability Services on Aug. 25 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Willard Hall room 320.
