A chemistry experiment in the Cristol Chemistry and Biochemistry Building at the University of Colorado at Boulder went awry at about 2 p.m. today and caused a chemical reaction resulting in a small fire but no injuries occurred.

Five undergraduate students were conducting a standard experiment underneath a fume hood when too much hydrogen gas apparently was produced, CU Police said. There was a chemical reaction and subsequent small fire that the students put out with a fire extinguisher. Damage was limited to the fume hood and was minor.

The Boulder Fire Department and CU Police responded to the scene. The students were checked by paramedics and released.

The cause of the chemical reaction and subsequent fire is under investigation by the Boulder Fire Department and the CU- Boulder Environmental Health and Safety office.
