Louise Romero, managing senior associate university counsel for the University of Colorado at Boulder, died Saturday, Nov. 5, at Sangre de Cristo Hospice and Palliative Care of Pueblo. She was 58 years old.

CU-Boulder Interim Chancellor Phil DiStefano said, "We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and respected colleague. The entire campus community has benefited from her considerable intellect, her legal expertise and her genuine dedication to higher education. We will always value the time, far too short, that she spent with us."

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 11 a.m. in the Old Main Chapel on the Boulder campus. A reception will follow in the Heritage Center of Old Main.

Romero was a graduate of the CU Law School and earned a master's degree in education from Ohio State University and a bachelor's degree from the University of Southern Colorado.

Prior to assuming her CU-Boulder position in 1994, Romero was a shareholder at Brownstein Hyatt Farber and Strickland law firm, where she had a general commercial practice with emphasis on bankruptcy and civil litigation. She also had served as an associate attorney with Brooks and Kreiger law firm, where she had a similar litigation practice.

In 1993, Romero was honored by the CU School of Law for contributions to the legal profession and the community, in commemoration of the law school's 100th anniversary and the 25th anniversary of the school's minority program. In 1992, Romero served on the Colorado Hispanic Bar Association's Board of Directors and served as its secretary in 1994.

Romero was an avid world traveler and enjoyed riding her bicycle in the Colorado mountains. She participated in many charity bike rides and recently rode several legs of the Tour de France.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers and food, donations may be made in Romero's name to the Boulder Humane Society, Children's Hospital of Denver, the Heifer Foundation, or Sangre de Cristo Hospice of Pueblo, in care of Adrian Comer Garden Chapel, 2710 N. Elizabeth St., Pueblo, Colorado 81003.
