The University of Colorado at Boulder has welcomed 138 new students from universities damaged by Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf Coast region since last week.

According to Kevin MacLennan, interim director of admissions for CU-Boulder, 136 undergraduate students have been through the admissions process and are already attending classes or will be shortly. The School of Law also admitted two students.

The majority of the new students are from Tulane University in New Orleans. Others have arrived from Loyola University New Orleans, University of New Orleans, Xavier University of Louisiana and Dillard University, all of which are in New Orleans.

"We have seen a mix of students from first-time freshmen all the way to seniors," MacLennan said.

The university admitted 80 new students between 8 a.m. and noon today, and is expecting 15 to 25 additional students to be admitted on Wednesday, Sept. 7, according to MacLennan. Five to 10 graduate students also have contacted the admissions office and were referred to specific departments.

"We really want students here by Wednesday, but in an emergency Thursday would be OK," MacLennan said. "We are discouraging anybody from coming after Thursday because they would have already missed too much class time."

Last week Interim Chancellor Philip DiStefano sent out a memo urging campus faculty and staff to do everything they could to help welcome students displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

CU-Boulder students started class Aug. 22.
