Joe E. Roy, II, has been appointed chief of police at the University of Colorado at Boulder effective Feb. 1.

Roy was selected through a rigorous search process following the August announcement of Police Chief Jim Fadenrecht's retirement on Jan. 31. Fadenrecht became chief in 1991 and leaves after 30 years of service to the department.

Roy began his career with CU-Boulder as a police officer in 1977 and has been director of Parking and Transportation Services for the last 19 years. Before accepting the Police Department's top position, Roy was the second-highest ranking commissioned officer and occasionally served as acting chief of police.

He has extensive experience overseeing parking operations and serving as a member of CU-Boulder's public safety command staff. Roy also has been a campus patrol officer, detective, self-defense instructor, shift supervisor and officer training sergeant. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science from CU-Boulder in 1976.

Paul Tabolt, vice chancellor for administration, said he was "pleased to have an incredible pool of candidates for the chief of police position."

"Joe Roy has a long history with the university," Tabolt said. "We have the utmost confidence that his knowledge and experience with the campus and the police department will serve him well as the new chief of police."

Roy will supervise 67 members of the police department and will receive an annual salary of $129,375.
