A photography contest and exhibit of pictures taken by international students at the University of Colorado at Boulder and study abroad alumni will take place during International Education Week, Nov. 15-19.
CU-Boulder's Office of International Education will honor 25 finalists and will distribute awards for the top six photos at a special reception Nov. 16 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the British Studies Room at Norlin Library.
The Nov. 16 reception is not open to the public but all 25 finalists' photos will be displayed in the Norlin Library gallery for the remainder of the fall 2004 semester. The gallery is free and open to the public.
Entries were judged on several criteria including: artistic and technical quality; cross-cultural content and representation of an experience in the photographer's home or host country; and a short written description explaining the photo's contents and context.
The grand prize is a travel voucher from STA Travel of Boulder.
Contestant Brandon Dorman, who in 2003 studied abroad in Perugia, Italy, wrote that his photo captured a rare moment in the center of a medieval Italian town. "I was able to capture a moment as this road may have looked even hundreds of years ago, with the shadows of the narrow stone road and the breakfast smoke rising from a chimney," Dorman wrote. "It's an example of how Italians live with and within their history; out of the dawn of a new day of a new millennium, history can wink at you."
The Nov. 16 awards reception will feature guest speaker Mary Ann Casey, a CU-Boulder alumna who for 27 years served as an American diplomat and was ambassador to Algeria and Tunisia at different times in her career.
"She will be talking about the importance of international education in the modern world and, in particular, the role of international education," said CU-Boulder study abroad administrator Jami Nelson-Nunez. "At this special reception, friends of the Office of International Education, staff and faculty, international students and study abroad alumni will be invited to help us recognize the need for -- and spread awareness of -- international education."
International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education designed to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences in the United States.
