Richard A. Rodriguez is the new director of Counseling and Psychological Services: A Multicultural Center at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Rodriguez was selected after a national search and joined the staff in July.

"We are very pleased to have Dr. Rodriguez join us as director of the counseling center," said Ron Stump, vice chancellor for student affairs. "He has interests, energy and leadership skills that will be of great benefit to CAPS and the campus. He will make significant contributions to our community."

The public is invited to attend a welcome reception for Rodriguez and open house for the center on Wednesday, Sept. 8, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Willard Hall room 101.

Rodriguez has more than 15 years experience in clinical services, individual, group and family psychotherapy and consultation, along with outreach to university students, faculty, staff and administrative groups.

Prior to his appointment at CU-Boulder, Rodriguez was director of Counseling and Psychological Services at Sonoma State University. He also has served as director of Multicultural Affairs at the California School of Professional Psychology and as counseling psychologist at the University of California, Berkeley.

Rodriguez's clinical expertise includes Chicano/Latino mental health, lesbian/gay identity development, HIV and adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse. His interests include serving as adviser to student organizations and investigating factors related to retention of first-generation college students.

Rodriguez earned doctoral and master's degrees in educational psychology from the University of Utah. He is the author of numerous publications and the recipient of several honors and awards.
