One of the world's leading social theorists will give a talk addressing the limitations of American unilateralism, "Reflections on the New Imperialism," at the University of Colorado at Boulder on Thursday, April 8.

David Harvey, a distinguished professor of anthropology at the City University of New York, will speak at 5 p.m. in the Eaton Humanities Building, room 150. The event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.

Harvey's talk will discuss afterthoughts on his book, "The New Imperialism," recently published by Oxford University Press. The book "mounts a stunning indictment of our present institutions of power, while offering hopeful insights about how these institutions could be changed," according to sociology Professor Richard Sennett of the London School of Economics.

Harvey's interdisciplinary work is described by CUNY as "the single most important, influential and imaginative contribution to the development of human geography since World War II." He previously taught at the University of Oxford, the London School of Economics, the Sorbonne and Johns Hopkins University.

The talk is sponsored by the Developing Areas Research and Teaching Program, the Center to Advance Research and Teaching in the Social Sciences and the CU-Boulder geography department.
