In recognition of their creative research and potential contributions to society, 11 professors at the University of Colorado at Boulder have received faculty fellowships for the 2004-05 academic year.

"We are pleased to grant these fellowships to 11 deserving members of the Boulder faculty," said Fred Pampel, associate vice chancellor for research in the CU-Boulder Graduate School. Pampel is a member of the campus' Council on Research and Creative Work, a nearly 70-year-old CU-Boulder organization that provides funding to outstanding faculty.

"Their plans for research and creative work impressed the council, and all exhibit the potential to have significant influence on their respective fields," Pampel said of the fellowship winners.

The professors will be released from teaching responsibilities in 2004-05 in order to pursue research projects. Each winner also is eligible for additional grant funding. Representing departments in the humanities and social and natural sciences, the fellowships will go to: Webster Cash, Jeffrey Cox, John Falconer, Bruce Holsinger, Charles Judd, Stephen McCormick, Russell Monson, John O'Loughlin, Kathy Rowlen, Veronica Vaida and Carl Wieman.

CU-Boulder is committed to the pursuit of excellence in research and creative work and fosters it, in part, through faculty fellowships. The university created the Council on Research and Creative Work in 1935 to encourage and strengthen such work by tenured faculty. The council's primary function is to provide faculty with financial assistance and release time from teaching responsibilities so that they may concentrate on a specific research topic.

Faculty fellowships are one of several types of awards funded by the council annually. The fellowships are highly competitive and awards are based on the quality of an applicant's proposal, the applicant's professional record and the likelihood that the applicant's research will result in contributions to academia and society.
