The University of Colorado at Boulder has named three recipients of the 2004 Dorothy Martin Faculty and Doctoral Student Awards, presented by Counseling and Psychological Services: A Multicultural Center.
The awards honor women who exemplify the ideals of Professor Emerita Dorothy Martin, a faculty member of the CU-Boulder psychology department for 46 years who was instrumental in establishing the first CU Women's Center in 1964.
Lee Chambers, an associate professor of history, received the Woman Faculty Award. Chambers was appointed director of Women's Studies at CU-Boulder in 1976 and was the first woman to chair the history department. She has taught women's history and women's studies at CU-Boulder for 27 years.
Melanie Jade Aguilar, a doctoral candidate in sociology and Kristina Gibson, a doctoral candidate in geography, each received the Woman Doctoral Student Award.
Aguilar studies gender from a sociological perspective. She works as a teacher's assistant and is the media relations coordinator for the Women's Resource Center. She also serves on the Chancellor's Committee on Women.
Gibson studies feminist urban geography with a focus on gay and lesbian youth and conflict in public spaces. As part of her studies she plans to volunteer for the New York City-based youth advocacy group FIERCE, Fabulous Independent Educated Radicals for Community Empowerment, and work with homeless gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth.
A reception for the award recipients will be held March 3 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Dennis Small Cultural Center.
