University of Colorado at Boulder faculty, staff, students and administrators will be volunteer readers in the St. Vrain and Boulder Valley school districts as part of Read Across America Day on Tuesday, March 2.

The National Education Association established the event in 1998 to encourage children and adults across the country to emphasize reading. The event is timed to coincide with the birthday of famed children's author Dr. Seuss, who would have turned 100 this year.

The CU-Boulder Office of Community Relations is marking the "Seussentennial" by planning local events to celebrate the day.

On March 2, CU-Boulder student-athletes, students and staff will be

reading at The Children's Hospital, 1056 E. 19th Ave. in Denver, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Another group of students and staff will be in Lafayette at Sanchez Elementary, 655 Galahad Dr., from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Chip, the CU mascot, will make appearances at both locations, leading read-alongs for participating students.

Additional volunteers, including bilingual readers, will read from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Spangler Elementary, 1440 Collyer St. in Longmont.

On the CU-Boulder campus, the CU Book Store will host a Dr. Seuss birthday party from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free bookmarks and stickers, drawings for a "Cat-in-the-Hat" hat and Dr. Seuss books, and a 20 percent discount on all children's books are among the special activities planned at the bookstore.
