CU-Boulder Research Associate Mark Serreze of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences will examine the state of the Arctic in a public seminar on campus on Friday, Jan. 23.

The talk, titled "Arctic Perspectives on the Climate Change Debate," will be at 10:30 a.m. in the Administrative Research Center, 3100 Marine St., in Room 620.

The Arctic has gained attention in the climate change debate because scientists expect the effects of global warming to be most pronounced in this region. Accelerated Arctic warming through the 21st century is a common theme of climate models.

Serreze, a researcher with CIRES' National Snow and Ice Data Center, will discuss recent changes in Arctic temperatures, sea ice and atmospheric circulation, and the controversy surrounding the relative roles of natural versus human-induced climate change in the region. A complete abstract is available at .

The talk is one in a series offered by the National Snow and Ice Data Center.
