Editors: Reporters and photographers are welcome to attend the keynote address by Beth Finke on Thursday, Nov. 13, at 8 a.m. in UMC room 235.

Accessing Higher Ground, the sixth annual conference on Assistive Technology and Accessible Media in Higher Education, will be held at the University of Colorado at Boulder University Memorial Center Nov. 11-14.

Beth Finke, author and National Public Radio commentator, will deliver the keynote address on Thursday, Nov. 13. A registration fee is required.

Finke was diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy and began losing her sight in 1984. While undergoing eye surgeries she kept journals on audiotape and continued making entries with the aid of a talking computer when the surgeries failed.

About 120 people are expected to attend the conference. Some of the conference sessions on Thursday and Friday, but not the keynote address, are free for CU-Boulder faculty, staff and students.

On Thursday, Nov. 13, at 12:30 p.m. the public is welcome to visit the vendor hall in UMC room 235. The hall will open again from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 14.

Program coordinators at the CU-Boulder AT Lab and Disability Services are bringing together national leaders in the field of assistive technology and media to educate students, staff, faculty and community members on the availability and potential benefits of assistive technology in education.

More than 45 workshops will be presented throughout the conference on topics including the Americans with Disabilities Act, legal and policy issues and accommodations for students with learning disabilities, visual impairments and physical disabilities. A number of hands-on workshops will address Web access.
