CU-Boulder students, faculty, staff and community members are encouraged to dust off their bicycles and get ready to ride at the 10th annual Active and Rapid Transportation Festival Sept. 3 through Sept. 5.

The CU Environmental Center and the campus Parking and Transportation Services are sponsoring the bash from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on those dates next week in the Norlin Library Quad.

The festival will feature discounts on bicycle gear, bicycle registration, alternative transportation information, the University of Colorado Credit Union bike loan program and the CU Student Bike Rental Program.

"We want to encourage everyone to welcome the new school year and ride their bicycles to school or work," said event promoter, Ryan Patterson. "The Fest is the perfect opportunity for everyone to learn about bicycling and alternative transportation in Boulder, have some food, listen to music and have fun on campus."

Bicyclists will be able to register their bicycles with CU for $10 on the spot, get a $10 tune-up from the Sports Garage, Cutting Edge Sports or Bicycle Village, buy discounted helmets and locks and win prizes. Bicycle commuters will be able to learn about electric bikes, local clubs and cycling opportunities in and around Boulder.

"I would encourage everyone to take this opportunity to register their bike and get a good lock, "said CU Transportation Outreach Coordinator, Mark Stevens. "Both can help you keep your bike safe for an enjoyable year of riding."

Fisher Honda will demonstrate electric and hybrid vehicle technology and the CU biodiesel program will be on hand to talk about campus initiatives to recycle grease and prevent pollution.

The Active and Rapid Transportation Fest will be held rain or shine. For more information call (303) 735-2705 or (303) 492-8308.
