K-12 teachers, university faculty and researchers from around the United States will gather at CU-Boulder from Aug. 3 through Aug. 5 for the 2003 meeting of the Digital Library for Earth System Education.

Hosted by the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, or CIRES, the meeting will be held in the Glenn Miller Ballroom at the University Memorial Center on the Boulder campus. The meeting is closed to the public, but media are encouraged to attend.

The digital library, known as DLESE, was designed to provide Internet access to high-quality educational materials for students, teachers and researchers, said CIRES Outreach Director Susan Buhr. "The purpose of the meeting is for the educational community to develop strategies to broaden the impact of DLESE."

Registrants also include representatives from the National Science Foundation, NASA, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, several major research centers and other digital libraries.

DLESE is headquartered at Boulder's University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, or UCAR. The first version of the library was developed with NSF funding in 2000. Members from around the nation use and build the library.

Currently, DLESE has search and browse functions and provides educational resources by grade level, keyword and educational resource type. A new version of the library is slated for release at the annual meeting.

Ultimately, DLESE will support a full range of data, maps and images for direct use in the classroom, Buhr said.
