The Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program at the University of Colorado at Boulder has received a $960,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to continue the program through 2007.

The McNair Program prepares selected CU-Boulder undergraduates to study at the doctoral level. It is a federally funded program primarily designed to prepare low-income, first-generation college students to pursue a Ph.D.

Colorado Congressman Mark Udall's office recently notified McNair Director Ramona Beal of the welcome news.

"We are very excited that the U.S. Department of Education has recognized the effectiveness of this program," Beal said. "Our scholars are enjoying success as recipients of honors designations, master's degrees and fellowship funding, and alumni tell us they were well prepared for the challenges of academia and enriching careers in higher education."

The McNair Program served 105 CU-Boulder undergraduates from underrepresented populations during its first six years. Ten of its alumni have gone on to enter doctoral programs or professional schools and 31 have either completed master's degrees or are in the process of doing so.

The McNair Program currently has openings for fall 2003. Additional information, as well as online applications for qualified students, may be accessed at .
