The University of Colorado at Boulder physics department will complete its new monthly Saturday Physics Series with a presentation on "Global Positioning Systems" on Saturday, April 12.

Physics Professor Neil Ashby will explain the physics behind GPS technology and some of its extraordinary uses during his talk at 2 p.m. in Duane Physics room G1B20.

Ashby will show the audience how the modern navigation system works, and will talk about some of the fascinating uses of the technology. GPS is used in a wide range of activities including tracking elephants in Africa and helping researchers explore the ocean floor for artifacts.

Ashby will bring a GPS receiver to his lecture and will show the inside of an inexpensive GPS "development kit."

The new series is sponsored by an outreach grant from the Division of Continuing Education at CU-Boulder and is targeted for Colorado high school students, teachers and adults.
