Colorado residents interested in creating safer schools are invited to attend a free two-day conference featuring Colorado Attorney General Ken Salazar and other special speakers on May 1-2 in Broomfield.
The Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence at the University of Colorado at Boulder will hold its third annual Safe Communities-Safe Schools Conference at the Omni Interlocken Resort. The conference will bring together students, school employees, law enforcement officers, researchers and community members to discuss recent findings on what works and what doesn't work in youth violence prevention.
The conference is free and open to the public but space is limited and registration is required. Deadline for registration is March 28.
Also speaking will be CU-Boulder sociology Professor Delbert Elliott, director of the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence and a nationally recognized authority on youth violence. Elliott was the senior scientific editor for the U.S. Surgeon General's Report on Youth Violence in 2001.
Topics will include threat assessment, school security, gang awareness, strategic planning, mental health, cultural competence, effective violence prevention programs and the roles of students and parents in safe schools.
The conference is sponsored by The Colorado Trust and the Colorado Division of Criminal Justice.
