University of Colorado at Boulder Chancellor Richard L. Byyny announced today the appointment of Pauline Hale, former director of public relations and current spokesperson for the Boulder campus, to the position of executive director of University Communications, effective Feb. 1.

The position was vacated in July 2002 when former Executive Director Bobbi Barrow resigned to join Denver Health Medical Center. A national search conducted last fall did not result in an appointment.

"I am delighted that Pauline, a long-time member of the campus community, will take on this important responsibility," Byyny said. "Her broad knowledge of the university and credibility as a communications professional will serve the campus well. I especially welcome her commitment to helping the campus reach its goals, including the Quality for Colorado initiative."

As spokesperson, Hale will continue to work closely with the chancellor and senior administrators in representing the Boulder campus. As executive director of University Communications, Hale will report to Ric Porreca, senior vice chancellor for the Boulder campus.

Hale served as CU-Boulder's director of public relations from 1982 to 1998, when she resigned to handle special projects in the Chancellor's Office and the Office of Planning, Budget and Analysis. She has served as campus spokesperson since last fall.

"I'm looking forward to this new challenge and opportunity with great enthusiasm," Hale said. "The Boulder campus is an inspiring place to work, and I view it as a great privilege to continue serving this university and its people."

Hale holds a bachelor's and master's degree in journalism, with a focus on public relations, from the University of Oklahoma. Prior to joining CU-Boulder in 1982, she had served as news coordinator at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, and as wire editor at a daily newspaper in Oklahoma.

In her new position, Hale will be responsible for managing an integrated communications program that includes publications and creative services, news services, marketing, photography services, web communications, community affairs and internal communications.
