The University of Colorado at Boulder will confer 1,981 degrees on Friday, Dec. 20, during the winter commencement ceremony in the Coors Events/Conference Center.

The commencement ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. and last about an hour. Guests are expected to be in their seats by 9:10 a.m. and early arrival is strongly suggested due to possible traffic delays. The university ceremony is free and open to the public and no tickets are required.

Guests also are asked not to bring large purses or bags to the ceremony, and guests entering the events/conference center may be subject to search.

Degrees awarded will include 1,483 bachelor's degrees, 343 master's degrees, 148 doctoral degrees and seven law degrees. The College of Arts and Sciences will lead the bachelor's degree count with 976 degrees, followed by Business with 233, Engineering with 130, Journalism with 85, Architecture and Planning with 43 and Music with 16. The Graduate School will award 486 degrees and the Business Graduate School five degrees.

CU-Boulder Distinguished Professor Jane Menken will give the commencement address. Menken, a professor of sociology who directs CU-Boulder's Institute of Behavioral Science, is recognized worldwide as a scholar in social science and demography. She has conducted two decades of groundbreaking work on women and fertility in Bangladesh, and both undergraduate and graduate students are active participants in her work.

Menken is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She has been a professor in the sociology department at CU-Boulder since 1997.

Also during the ceremony, CU-Boulder Professor Emeritus Wes Blomster will receive the University Medal in recognition of his achievements as a teacher and music critic. Blomster was a professor of German for 33 years at CU-Boulder. He also is known for his music reviews, many of which appear in the Daily Camera where he has been a music critic since 1982.
