The first University of Colorado at Boulder Leadership Conference for CU-Boulder students will be held Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Glenn Miller Ballroom at the University Memorial Center. It is free and open to all students.
The conference is organized by Student Renaissance Leadership and will be organized according to the following topics: diversity and women in leadership, leadership in community, personal leadership and global leadership.
Workshops and panels will feature faculty, community members and students. The keynote speaker, environmentalist and activist Harvey Wasserman, will speak at 6 p.m. in the Glenn Miller Ballroom and community members as well as students are welcome to attend his talk.ÌýÌý
"We are all highly motivated and excited about the conference," said Shannon Smith, Student Renaissance committee member, student assistant to the Office of Student Programs and recent winner of an Association for College Unions International scholarship. "I think it's going to be a great contribution for current and future CU students."
The leadership conference has long been an important consideration among many administrators on campus, Smith said, and the creation of a student leadership committee and the conference are definitive steps toward developing and unifying leaders on campus.ÌýÌý
Leasa Weimer, assistant UMC director of programs, recruited a committee of eight students with a variety of majors last fall to develop the conference. The committee members chose the name Student Renaissance Leadership to indicate a new beginning or rebirth of the importance of leadership in education.
The conference is sponsored by the Parents Association, the Department of Housing, the Vice Chancellor's Office for Student Affairs and Career Services.
