CU Professor and Nobel Prize winner Carl Wieman will discuss the challenges and rewards of being a faculty member at a panel for the Summer Multicultural Access to Research Training program Aug. 1 at 1 p.m. in Duane Physics, room G131.

Wieman won the Nobel Prize in physics last October along with senior scientist Eric A. Cornell of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Both Wieman and Cornell are fellows of JILA, a joint institute of CU-Boulder and NIST.

Professor Brian Argrow of engineering and Professor Theresa Hernandez of psychology also will be featured on the panel and will explain the importance of being dedicated educators.

"The professors involved in the panel are successful and can demonstrate to the students that being a member of the faculty is fun as well as challenging and rewards hard work and perseverance at the same time," said Maureen Lienau, SMART project director.

SMART was established on the Boulder campus in 1989. It is a 10-week summer research program for undergraduates that prepares them for graduate study by providing a structured research experience with faculty mentors and workshops.

The program is funded by the National Science Foundation, the Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate Program, and the offices of the chancellor, provost, and graduate school. The Leadership Alliance and the Hughes Initiative also provide support.
