Richard Kraft, professor emeritus of the University of Colorado at Boulder's School of Education, has received a Fulbright Senior Specialist grant to the Shouman University In-Service Teacher Training Department in Bulgaria.

While in Bulgaria, Kraft will conduct seminars with various experts, conduct a workshop with teacher trainers and provide consultations on individual projects.

Kraft, who will be leaving July 8, is among the first grantees under the new Fulbright Senior Specialists short-term grants program. The new program offers two- to six-week grants to leading U.S. academics and professionals to support curricular and faculty development and institutional planning at academic institutions in 140 countries around the world.

Having participated in several outreach programs, Kraft's work includes more than 30 years with teacher education and curriculum reform programs throughout Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East. Kraft has been on the CU-Boulder faculty since 1968 as a professor in the School of Education. He also is the recently retired director of the Chancellor's Leadership Residential Academic Program, which is based in a Williams Village residence hall. His main interests lie in leadership, service and social justice. Kraft previously had Fulbright grants to Portugal, Ecuador and Chile.

Created to complement the 55-year-old traditional Fulbright Scholar Program, the Senior Specialists Program aims to increase the number of faculty and professionals who have the opportunity to go abroad on a Fulbright.

The Fulbright Scholar Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is managed by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars. The program's purpose is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.
