Deborah Coffin has been named director of the Department of Housing at the University of Colorado at Boulder, according to Ron Stump, vice chancellor for student affairs.

The appointment has been approved by Chancellor Richard Byyny and is effective July 1. Coffin has held the position on an interim basis since December.

"During the past six months Deb has proven her ability to serve in the position and has earned my confidence, as well as others, that she is the right person to be the director," Stump said.

"She is to be congratulated for her work on improving partnerships with other units on campus and for positively responding to the issues and challenges that the department has faced."

Coffin has 20 years experience in higher education. She began her career in student housing at the University of Northern Colorado in 1982 as a residence hall director and complex manager, later serving there as assistant director and director of residence life. She also worked at the University of Wyoming at Laramie as director of housing and residence life.Ìý

She joined the CU-Boulder housing administration last June as assistant director of dining services and hospitality before assuming the position of interim director.

Coffin earned a master's degree in human communication theory from the University of Northern Colorado. She has a lengthy record of professional activities, including presentations, teaching, research and grant awards.Ìý

She also is a member of numerous professional organizations and is involved in many community activities.

The CU-Boulder Department of Housing is a $40 million-a-year operation that accommodates approximately 6,000 students living on campus, in addition to 850 apartments across six properties for students with families, faculty and staff. Construction of a new student housing project at Williams Village to accommodate 994 students is scheduled to begin this month.
