Robert H. Davis, chair of chemical engineering and Patten Professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has been named dean of the CU-Boulder College of Engineering and Applied Science.

The appointment, effective July 1, was announced today by Provost Phil DiStefano pending final approval by the CU Board of Regents.

"I am very pleased that Rob emerged from the search process as the ideal candidate for the dean's position," said DiStefano. "He has a superb record in research, teaching, leadership and service. His record of accomplishment will serve as a great foundation for leading the college toward a strong future."

Davis joined the CU-Boulder faculty in l983, after completing his doctorate at Stanford University in l982 and then spending an academic year at Cambridge University as a NATO Postdoctoral Fellow. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University of California at Davis and a master's degree in chemical engineering at Stanford before continuing on to complete his doctorate.

Davis' research interests include studies of fluid dynamics, biotechnology and membrane filtration. He is an author on nearly 200 peer-reviewed research articles, teaching articles and book chapters. While on the CU-Boulder faculty, he has raised more than $18 million in external funding for research and educational initiatives.

He and his wife, Shirley, are the parents of two young daughters.

Davis replaces interim engineering Dean Roop L. Mahajan, who has served in the position since September 2001 while a national search was conducted.

Davis' appointment will be on the June agenda of the Board of Regents. His annual salary is proposed at $220,000.
